CLANN CARLOS
CLAN CARLOS
TRIBE CARLOS
SURNAME CARLOS
GREETINGS!
This is a “Surname-CARLOS-from-Ireland” family history, surname-study, and resource center website
Before I go further, I have to say this:
After several months of studying, analyzing & intuiting, it is my opinion that this surname came to Ireland (by way of Ulster) from the Dal Riada region of southwestern Scotland (part of the Scottish Highlands) in the capacity of galloglas associated with (in the order of the most likely) 1) Clan MacLEAN; 2) Clan CAMPBELL; or 3) Clan DONALD.
The part of County Roscommon where my CARLOS’ were located in 1830 was O’Conor Roe’s territory.
My intention is to be available to people who have a personal interest in, from all over the world, some history, mythology & genealogy of CARLOS-from-Ireland and/or Scotland families, and in the surname itself. When I say “CARLOS,” I mean ALL its variant spellings, current & obsolete!
There is no such thing as a “Clann CARLOS” per se, but I have named it thusly because it contains keywords necessary for you to find this website using a search engine. It worked you’re here!
I have been unable to find anyone else who is working on this surname (with all its variations) in any sort of comprehensive manner if you know of anyone, do contact me. If there IS another CARLOS surname resource center on the Internet, I couldn’t find it. I had to start from scratch, and in the beginning I got nowhere. Everyone I bumped into who was interested in the surname CARLOS was as clueless as I! it was the blind leading the blind.
Part of my creating this CARLOS section came from frustration on not finding others “who have trod this path before me,” so to speak. Therefore since I have been able to make some inroads, I figured I’d put the stuff on my website for your benefit so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. At least you’ll have some pointers with which to start your research, whereby I had none.
Over the ages, Ireland has been intimately meshed with Scotland, so when I say Ireland or Scotland, I am referring to both of them. Likewise, whenever I say “Mc” or “Mac,” I mean both of them. Genealogically & historically, Ireland and Scotland are the “same country” with a bit of water in between.
Because of the history of Ireland and the “Flight of the Earls” and other emigrations out-of-Ireland & Scotland to other countries, I HAVE decided to include CARLOS’ from England, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, etc. but my focus will always be to and from Ireland and/or Scotland. Therefore, if you find evidence that your CARLOS’ have no connection whatsoever with Ireland or Scotland, this is not the site for you. Dealing with Ireland & Scotland’s CARLOS’ is more than enough work for one person.
Rough sketch of Ireland’s & Scotland’s CARLOS’ in one place:
A CARLOS resource center
I have spent a lot of time trying to uncover what tribes or septs the surname CARLOS comes from, was allied with in the remote past (ancient?), where they passed through & settled for a few hundred years, or perhaps discover what large migrations within Ireland & Scotland did CARLOS’ find themselves part of. Who was friend & who was foe?
Your stories & oral traditions
A good clue is any oral tradition that got handed down to YOU about your CARLOS ancestors. What hints or anecdotes do you have about where your Irish CARLOS’ came from? What Irish or Scottish surnames married into your CARLOS line prior to 1900? If I receive anecdotal information from different CARLOS researchers, I may be able to put some of some puzzle pieces together in order to see a pattern, then disseminate the info to you all. Anecdotal information is important, so if you’d like to share “what was told to you” with me, I will set it aside until other pieces come in. Of course, this cannot be rushed because I have to hang out until people find this site & email me with their stories.
Several different theories
There is evidence for several different theories regarding CARLOS origins in Ireland & Scotland. CARLOS’ could have been allied with a number of other groupings through the centuries. I have tried to keep each distinct, although there is some obvious overlap. It may turn out that any of the theories is related to another one, but in a different time and/or place frankly I can’t figure it out. I am not even going to try to fill in the blanks. I’m not a scholar of Irish history, mythology & folklore, just a lay person with a personal interest in the surname CARLOS. I don’t speak or write Gaelic, although I am actually getting the hang of it.
Analyze, sort through, and build on what is here on these webpages. This CARLOS website is a work in progress, a good portion of the time providing you with ONLY a starting point and a rough sketch. Decide for yourself which theory makes sense to you and what is useful.
I want to present you with the information AND “where it is written,” but know that much of the time “where it is written” itself cannot be verified because it is myth, but nonetheless I provide sources if I have them. Admittedly I won’t always know the source. I will try to provide a paper-trail “of sorts” of where I got my information.
I present you these theories in an unbiased way. All the theories involve conflicting information on the face of it. I have no interest in suppressing information FOR one theory to the detriment of another. I have tried to sort like items together.
If you have another theory regarding the CARLOS surname, I’ll add it but only if you include “where it was written” in as much detail as you can muster. I won’t publish a theory if it is merely heresay or opinion without sources. If you see one theory actually meshes with another, let me know in detail how it goes. I certainly can create a new webpage with YOUR theory on it, and it will include your contact information.
Louis -> Louie
Carlis -> Carlee
In French, LOUIS (pron. LOO-ISS) is pronounced LOO-EE. Apply this idea to CARLIS. CARLIS (pron. CAR-LIS) would be pronounced CAR-LEE. Spelling variatiions: CARLEY, CARLY, CARLIE. So it is not so far-fetched that this really is the same family name, particularly when located in the same County in Ireland, transmuted over the centuries.
